Are you a compassionate and empathetic listener? Do you want to make a positive impact in the day-to-day lives of the people to whom you provide care? If you enjoy working towards making a difference while understanding that kind and compassionate care is the foundation of working with individuals then you might be curious about becoming a Health Care Assistant.

What is a Health Care Assistants' Role

Health Care Assistants are an integral part of an individual's care team, and play a part in supporting a person’s attainment of the highest physical, mental and spiritual well-being possible.

How the Health Career Access Program Works

Becoming a Health Care Assistant may feel like a daunting task. Between juggling school commitments, financial concerns as well as working, it may seem like now is not the time to begin a new career. Fortunately, the Province of BC has many options available to be of assistance when it comes to striving for higher education as well as finding that perfect career fit.

The Health Career Access Program (HCAP) is an initiative that allows you to work and get paid while training. The first step is working as a Health Care Support Worker, gaining experience through non-direct care. The paid training lasts between six to 12 months of full-time post-secondary education, allowing you to become a Health Care Assistant upon graduation. In exchange for free education and paid training, the Province requires a 12-month Return of Service Agreement to be signed and adhered to.
