What to Look For in an Assisted Living Suite

What to Look For in an Assisted Living Suite

September 27th, 2017

Choosing an assisted living suite can be a very difficult choice. Not only are you facing the prospect of giving up your home, downsizing your possessions, and giving up a lot of things that you take for granted, you have to decide what suite is right for you. Here are a few tips to follow when making that choice:

1. Does the suite meet your needs?

Before walking into an assisted living facility, sit down and make a list of everything you need. Don’t just focus on closet space or the size of the kitchenette, which are very important, but also think about your medical needs.

Are you able to walk without aid, or will you need a suite that can accommodate a walker or a wheelchair? Do you need the bedroom to be very close to the bathroom for late night trips?

2. Will the suite meet your future needs?

Don’t think short term – think long term as well. If your health deteriorates, or your lose some of your mobility, will you end up moving? If you know that your new home is going to last you for a long time, you’ll feel much better about the choice you make.

3. Does the suite fit your lifestyle?

Downsizing is a big requirement before moving into an assisted living suite, but there are still things that you’re not going to want to live without. Maybe it’s a computer to keep track of your loved ones. Maybe it’s a reading chair, or a music stand. But you need to decide before choosing whether you’ll be able to do the things you love.

There are other things to think about when considering the assisted living facility itself, such as location and staffing, but if you’ve found the perfect suite, those decisions may take care of themselves.

So come and talk to one of the friendly staff at The Hamlets at Vernon and we’ll show you what kind of suites we have that can fit your needs and lifestyle.
